What to do if…

Who to call and what to do when something goes wrong in the villages. If anyone is in danger, call 999.

Emergency? Call 999

There's a power cut

  • Check your trip switch first. If only your home is off, it may be your own electrics.
  • Call 105 (free from any phone) to report a power cut or get updates, or check the power cut map.
  • Keep fridge and freezer doors shut, and unplug sensitive equipment until the power is back.
  • If you depend on medical equipment, ask your energy supplier about the Priority Services Register.

You smell gas

  • Call 0800 111 999 straight away (free, 24 hours).
  • Don't use light switches, flames or phones near the smell. Open doors and windows.
  • Turn the gas off at the meter if it's safe to do so, then go outside to wait.

There's a water leak or no water

  • Leaks in the road or pavement, or no water: Severn Trent, 0800 783 4444.
  • Leaks inside your home: turn off your stopcock and call a plumber.

It's flooding

  • If anyone is in danger, call 999. Never walk or drive through floodwater.
  • Flood warnings: Floodline 0345 988 1188, or sign up for free warnings on GOV.UK.
  • A flooded road or blocked drain: report it to Worcestershire County Council online or on 01905 765765.
  • Sandbags and what to do in a flood: Wychavon's emergency flooding advice.

You see a crime or antisocial behaviour

  • If it's happening now or someone is in danger, call 999.
  • Otherwise call 101 or report it online to West Mercia Police.
  • To report it anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

You've lost or found a pet

  • Dogs: call the dog warden (Worcestershire Regulatory Services) on 01905 822799, weekdays 9am to 5pm, or use their online form. Stray dogs they collect go to their kennels.
  • Cats and other pets: ring local vets, check with the microchip databases and put up notices.
  • Keep your pet's microchip details up to date.

Animals are loose on the road

  • If they're a danger to traffic, call 999. Otherwise call 101, and tell the farmer if you know whose they are.
  • Don't try to herd them yourself.

You find fly-tipping

  • Don't touch it: it may be dangerous, and it may be evidence.
  • Report it to Wychavon District Council through GOV.UK's fly-tipping page.
  • If you see someone dumping rubbish, note the time, place and vehicle registration, but only if it's safe.

A tree is down, or there's a pothole

  • If a fallen tree is blocking a road dangerously, call 999. If it's on a power line, keep well away and call 105.
  • Otherwise report fallen trees, potholes, broken streetlights and blocked drains to the county council online or on 01905 765765.

A footpath is blocked

  • Report it to Worcestershire County Council's rights of way team using their online form. Give the footpath number if you can (it's on the waymarker or the map).
  • See also our Walks & footpaths page.
