Defibrillators

If someone collapses and isn't breathing normally

  1. Call 999 on speaker. They'll tell you where the nearest defibrillator is and give you the cabinet code.
  2. Start CPR. Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest, about twice a second. Send someone else for the defibrillator; if you're alone, don't stop CPR to fetch it.
  3. Switch it on, usually a green button, and do what it tells you.
  4. Bare the chest and stick the pads on as the picture shows. There are scissors in the pack.
  5. Stand clear while it checks the heart. It decides whether a shock is needed; press the button if told, or it does it for you.
  6. Keep going with CPR until it tells you to stop, the person starts breathing normally, or the ambulance crew takes over.
